Professor Anthony C. Hilton

Following a PhD in microbiology from the University of Birmingham, Anthony has remained in the Higher Education sector and continued to pursue research across a wide spectrum of applied microbiology topics.  He has particular interest in the molecular epidemiology of foodborne pathogens and other important clinical bacteria including MRSA and Clostridium difficile.

Throughout his research career, spanning over 30 years, he has maintained a strong interest in the applied aspects of microbiology, driven by the challenge of finding innovative practical answers to real microbiological problems in industry, clinical, veterinary and environmental settings where detailed knowledge of bacterial strains is essential. His research is primarily directed towards the application of molecular biology techniques to the characterisation and investigation of bacterial pathogens, exploiting recent advances in whole genome sequencing to enable the simultaneous profiling of complex communities of bacteria. His work is multidisciplinary and collaborative with clinical, veterinary, industry and academic partners both nationally and internationally. 

In addition to senior leadership roles in Higher Education and Non-Exec Director roles in the NHS, he has served as honorary general secretary of the Society for Applied Microbiology, Trustee of the International Forum on Home Hygiene and held several journal editorial positions. He is a National Teaching Fellow, Fellow of the Royal Society for Biology and the Institute of Biomedical Science. Through his work with the media he is a regular contributor to print and broadcast articles in the field of popular microbiology and a passionate advocate for engaging non-science specialists and younger learners in microbiology.
